How far have we come?

Hola. Hope you are well.

In the 1950’s and 60’s there were signs in shops and bed & breakfasts that read, ‘No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs’ fast forward to July 2013 and we have 2 vans issued by our government going round parts of London telling people to ‘Go home’. Is this progress?

These things don’t just happen, at some point the government must have sat down and had a meeting about how they could deal with illegal immigration and the best idea they could come up with was these two vans. I can’t help imagining that after they agreed on this as a course of action, they said, ‘By Jove, I think we’ve got it’, patted each other on the back and then moved onto the next thing on the agenda, probably the economy.

If the government are sending out vans asking illegal immigrants to hand themselves in, it makes me feel like they haven’t really got a handle on the matter. They may as well just send out another van saying, ‘If you’ve ever committed a crime, ring 999’.

If you have come to this country, maybe to escape torture and/or death, travelling here in awful conditions then you’re probably not going to turn yourself in just because a van drives by saying you should.

Til next time, stay safe!
