Hard Out Here

Hola. Hope you are well.

Lily Allen‘s new video for ‘Hard Out Here’ has caused a bit of a stir. Some people have claimed it is racist because the majority of the female dancers are black.

I think it’s somewhat unfair to attack Lily because she is on the right side of the argument. She’s obviously making a point about the number of music videos where male artists are surrounded by scantily clad women.

My problem with her video is that it didn’t go far enough because although it’s a parody the only significant difference is that this video is fronted by a woman. There are still women prancing around with next to nothing on and that’s before we mention the colour of the majority of these woman.

What is probably required to turn the genre on its head is for a male rapper to shoot a video surrounded by men wearing just hot pants or cavorting with average looking, average sized women from all cultural backgrounds. I wonder how a treatment for such a video would go down with record companies.

For what it’s worth I think Lily Allen’s biggest crime isn’t this video, it’s covering a Keane song.

Til next time, stay safe!
