Never Forget

I’ve heard it said Theresa May’s political career will be defined by Brexit. I sincerely hope not as I wouldn’t want people to forget the Hostile Environment she created at the home office resulting in the ‘Go Home Vans’ and the Windrush cruelty. I wouldn’t want people to forget how she significantly cut police numbers as Home Secretary. I wouldn’t want people to forget her awful 2017 election campaign where not only did she repeat her mantra, ‘Strong & Stable’ to the point of ridicule but had to do the unheard thing of abandoning her manifesto policy (‘dementia tax’) part way through the campaign. And I certainly wouldn’t want people to forget how she treated the Grenfell survivors.

How to counter a powerful narrative.

I watched a Brexit Party video the other day and basically their message is that ‘the people’ (which people) have been betrayed by the political establishment who have stopped Brexit happening. Not only is this seen as a betrayal apparently it’s also undemocratic. As someone who thinks Brexit is more complex than this, I still think the Brexit Party has very a powerful narrative. With this in mind how can other parties counter this narrative?

Why am I not on Marr?

When the Lib Dems did better than expected at the local elections people said this shows we want to remain in the EU. Now that The Brexit party are polling well for the European elections people are saying this shows we want to leave the EU. I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this but Brexit is polarising, people either want to leave or they want to remain.

Do we owe sir vince cable an apology?

I’ve had to sit and watch the political commentariat put the Lib Dems unexpected good performance in the local elections down to a protest vote, a resurgence, or a response to their remain stance over Brexit. The truth however is that on the last 2 prongcasts I do, we have mocked Sir Vince Cable over his lack of achievements as Lib Dem leader. I can only assume the electorate voted in such large numbers for his party just to spite us.

Inspiring criticism.

I do find it somewhat amusing when people say under Jeremy Corbyn there’s now a culture within the Labour party where you can’t criticise the leadership. Since he was elected leader he’s been criticised by his own MPs, former Labour MPs & former Labour PMs. If anything his leadership has inspired way more criticism within his own ranks than less.

Meritocracy??

If the likes of Dominic Raab, Chris Grayling, Esther McVey or Boris Johnson were black and gained their senior positions within government via a positive action scheme, people would highlight their many deficiencies and say ‘this is what happens when people don’t get their job on merit’. With this in mind, did the above people get their jobs on merit?

Me or Jeremy Corbyn?

I was walking home from the pub when I passed a couple, in so doing I heard the man say to his wife/girlfriend that he could never vote for Jeremy Corbyn because he is an idiot. Fuelled by a pint and a half (and because I’m a fan) I started to sing ‘Oh Jeremy Corbyn…’ only to hear a woman from one of the flats shout “loser” but was she calling me or a Corbyn a loser????

Rioting workshops

When I used to do poetry workshops in prisons before and after 2010 there were definitely less riots and general violence in prisons.

Some people might say this is because the government have cut the number of prison officers. Others may point to the fact experienced officers have been replaced with young and inexperienced officers, who are unable to deal as effectively with such circumstances. Some may say that the above reasons has meant that prisoners are being locked up for upto 23 hours a day leading to justified resentment. Others may say we send too many people to prison in the first place.

I on the other hand am saying the increase in prison violence is down to my lack of poetry workshops. So confident of my abilities that during the next prison riots I want the governor to ring me and I will guarantee to calm the situation within 2 hours with a mix of word association games and a few clever rhymes. I await the call.

The last word on the General Election

I know the world has moved on from the General Election but I feel everyone needs to read my thoughts, so here goes.

  • Firstly, why would you call an election and make it about personality when you don’t have any … erm… personality.
  • Hopefully this election has put to bed the idea that Lynton Crosby is some kind of genius. Thankfully the public saw through soundbite politics. It would appear the electorate weren’t prepared to put up with ‘strong and stable’ for 7 weeks.
  • Despite their best efforts it would appear the ability of papers like The Sun and The Daily Mail to influence the voters is on the wane.
  • The last point may in some ways have something to do with the increase in the youth vote, who don’t get their news from the traditional media.
  • And finally it was good to see the experts before the election telling us how it was going to go and then after the election tell us why these things didn’t happen. It’s almost like the political experts don’t really know what the electorate is going to do.

A progressive alliance

A minority government sounds like it should be really progressive. A government that includes black people, asian people and people from other ethnic groupings, people with disabilities and people who identify as LGBTQI.

Instead it’s what happens when the Conservatives do a bit rubbish at an election.
